About Cutout

A free, browser-based background remover.

Most online background-removal tools work the same way: you upload your photo to a server, a model runs on that server, and a result comes back — often watermarked unless you pay, and always involving your photo leaving your device at least once.

Cutout works differently. The AI segmentation model runs as WebAssembly directly inside your browser, so the entire process — reading the image, detecting the subject, clearing the background, generating the download — happens on your own device. Your photo is never transmitted to a server at any point.

Why this exists

This project started from a simple frustration: background removal is a small, common task that shouldn't require an account, a watermark, or a wait. Running the AI model client-side removes the need for any of that — there's no server-side processing cost per image, so there's no reason to gate the result behind a paywall or a signup form.
